I'm celebrating the fact that a year ago today I wrote my first blog post.

Thanks to everyone who has visited my little online home and learned a little about me.

I really enjoy your comments, emails and watching your own creative endeavors unfold.

I am grateful to my friends and family for being so supportive of my need to communicate my thoughts on writing, crafts, illness and art.

The people that I've met online through this blog have become a huge source of support & encouragement.

It has been a wildly transformational year and as I continue on my journey I am looking to the future to make some changes and additions to my blog that I hope you will enjoy.

***************************

Is there anything you would like to see here or that you have enjoyed in the past that you'd like to see again?

I'd love to know.

Cheers to year 2 of blogging away!

Recently my poodle, Bastian, lost a tooth that was bothering him. The tooth was in the front of his mouth so everything he bumped caused him pain. He couldn't play fetch and he often shied away from petting to avoid getting his painful tooth touched in any way. At his age the anesthesia required for pulling a tooth can be fatal so we waited to see if this problem could right itself. One day Bastian returned from the groomer without that tooth. The groomer told us that it fell out during his grooming. Each day since Basty has had more energy, playfulness and seems all-around happier. He fetches his toys, snuggles his face against us and has no trouble eating up his food.

This week my arthritis has been flaring. For me this means that I have been having knee, foot and back pain and I haven't been sleeping very well. I usually avoid standing or walking for long periods of time even when I am not in flare so when I am in flare I only take small walks to manage pain and swelling. When I am in flare I am really fatigued and don't feel like being creative at all. I generally have a hard time writing, sketching, painting and knitting in flare. Lately, I've been comparing my experience with pain with Bastian's and thinking how much better I would feel without arthritis pain in my life. I don't want to sink back into depression by thinking about the things that have changed for me since my diagnosis, however I do want to experience less pain and physical limitation. Basically, I want to run and play again, too.

It has been a year now since I left teaching to deal with my arthritis and get it under control. In this time I have tried medications (Methotrexate and Enbrel), an elimination diet and I have been denied disability. Now that I am back in Florida I am applying for jobs and hoping to find benefits so I can try and get back on Enbrel again. It is frustrating and nerve-wracking to deal with all the changes in my life since last year. I feel very isolated by my arthritis and frustrated, too. I am not the kind of person that likes transitions and this has been a huge transition which causes a lot of anxiety for me. Although I was unhappy at work I am afraid that I will not find another fulfilling/sustaining job and this stresses me as I look for work. I am still pursuing grad school but have to make ends meet in the meantime. Looking back on what I've written thus far in this post I am aware that I am venting. Thanks for listening, dear reader.

xo,

One thing I love about this time of year is all the bunnies and chickens.

They are on television, in the stores and on packages everywhere.

When I go to the fair I have to be pulled away from the bunnies.

I can hang out, petting them and feeding them carrots for hours.

I took a ton of pictures of bunnieslast year, too

butcan I find them right now? No.

Bunny cartoon characters are always tricky and quick.

I have been playing the Xbox game Rayman lately,

with it's crazy plunger-shooting bunnies.

They make me laugh with their little crazy noises and facial expressions.

I also love dark bunny art, which is why I decided to name my art venture

ScarBunny Studios. As soon as I am brave enough I'll fill that

Etsy shop with crazy dark art like this:

When I was little and in a bad mood my mom and I would get our hand-puppet bunnies out

and my crabby bunny was always called ScarBunny,

kind of like the Oscar the grouch of bunnies.

I can picture him perfectly but can't yet draw him to my satisfaction.

As I take some more drawing classes this year I'll hopefully be able to bring

that character to life on the page.

Another springtime symbol is the chick.

My kitchen is decorated in chickens and roosters.

The folk art kind are my favorite.

I love the spotted black and white roosters and the tawny red chickens.

Last year I took a fabulous class from PJ Hornberger

and learned to paint a folk art chicken.

I painted it right onto my notebook cover.

There are so many beautiful things about spring

but bunnies and chickens

are one of my favorite

symbols of the new season.

This is about leaving written proof of our life for the future. Read all about it here.

Last night healthcare reform passed and I am so glad. You see when I was diagnosed with arthritis I tried a few medications that took a long time to work and then made me even sicker. Unable to even walk around the building without pain meds, I took medical leave from teaching. After a long battle I realized it was inevitable: my insurance required me to pay in (more than my rent) and I couldn't afford it. My decision to resign and figure out how to treat my arthritis was a tough one and I was soon denied private insurance due to my diagnosis. I had to stop taking all of my prescriptions and seek alternative medicine. I am still struggling with pain and the after-effects of my medicine. Last night was a victory for hard-working people like me who get ill and deserve insurance. I am so happy that we will have decent medical care in this country at last.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.mydarlinganodyne.com/home/2010/3/19/teepee-heaven.html"><rss:title>Teepee Heaven</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.mydarlinganodyne.com/home/2010/3/19/teepee-heaven.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

My happy thought for today-teepees!

Yes, I've been bitten by the whiny, self-obsessed, break-up mopes.

Here are 6 things I've found to keep my mind off having to enter the dating pool again.

1. Color Me Katie Blog

One minute of looking through the videos, posts about Moo and lovely colors and I forgot about frowning.

2. OPI Nailpolish in All A-Bordeaux the Sled

I just love looking at newly polished nails! How can I keep such a dark purply-brown from chipping? Anyone?

3. Amanda Valdes' Art

Her paintings are gorgeous and I can't wait to see them in person again when I'm next in Florida.

4. Art Journaling Magazine

It is a never-ending source of inspiration to fill up my Moleskine journal.

5. Positively Present

This site reminds me to center my thoughts aroud today. Today is all we are working with.

6. Elizabeth Gilbert

I am loving her new book, Committed. If you haven't read Eat, Pray, Love-do it! I swear you will love it. It is one of the only books I like to reread. This is the kind of book that makes me feel courageous and introspective.

Can you share a story about being afraid and doing it anyway?

It’s a toss up between going into see my mother after her car accident before she was medivac’d to the special trauma hospital or the first time I remember being alone.

I’ll go with the latter. I was probably 3, going on 4. My mom and my Papa went into town to pick up my dad who was home on leave. He drove a big semi that couldn’t turn around on our tiny dirt road. My mother probably assumed I wouldn’t wake up from my nap before they made it home.

I remember waking up sweaty and uncomfortable. I cried out for my mom, and no one answered. I went all over the house yelling for someone, until I got to the basement door. I HATED the basement. There were monsters down there. I was absolutely certain. Kat’s basement had fraggles, they left lights on. Who knew what lurked in our dark basement. My Papa’s room was down there. I remember opening the door and being so scared I could barely get a squeeked “Pa..pa?” It had felt like hours had gone by. This is probably the root of all my abandonment issues. I’ve grown into a clingy adult.

In my slippery footed pajamas I made my way to the basement. I checked each room with the exception of the shadow filled spidery furnace room, and raced back upstairs.

I checked outside too, even ringing the flakey emergency bell to see if anyone was in the woods. I was probably more in danger of being eaten by bears or cougars on our deck, than in the basement, where the monsters lurked.

Can you tell about taking a chance and how it worked out?

I chose to postpone finishing college to keep a relationship together. I followed him to Europe…twice. This delayed graduation by 2 years. After graduation I followed him to Minnesota. …um, I’m still waiting on the worked out part. Can I get back to you?

Could you please share a story about the unexpected moment of synchronicity?

I believe we make our own luck. A sour attitude can cause us to miss these magical little moments or at least not be able to appreciate them. The last time we moved to France was a recipe for disaster. We received our teaching placements 2 weeks before the start of the school year. We needed to first pack up our house in the States, then rent it out, find a place to live in France, get the dog ready for international travel, let the our schools know when we’d be arriving, etc… Oh yeah, I forgot my VISA hadn’t arrived, the post office couldn’t find it. I was starting to get wound tighter and tighter. I felt like I’d snap like a too tight guitar string. Just as I started to make travel plans to acquire a new VISA in Chicago, my showed up. The dog got her microchip and shots. Our house got packed (kinda). We rented got it rented. We sent expedited letters to our placement schools declaring our due dates. We found a great place to live shortly after arriving. (I was really really sick when we left the States. I let my boyfriend choose where we live; he did a really good job.) Too bad the school never read our letters. We showed up, and they weren’t expecting any teachers. Oh well… you win some, you lose some.

How do you feel about dreaming BIG?

Dreaming is what keeps people like me from burying my head under the covers in the morning. I’m an only child, so my imagination was the closest thing to a sibling. I love dreaming about the “what if’s”. I dream of owning a B&B with sprawling gardens filled with flowers and vegetables, as well as laughing children romping around with an energetic dog. There’s a farm in my dream with some livestock. This means there will probably be a fair amount of bull$#*t too. I’m trying to keep the dream within the realm of reality. Everyday I try to make conscious decisions that will lead my dream into fruition. It helps to write your dreams down. I’ve got notebooks full of floor plans and garden items. I may have taken it to the extreme. My house journal has pictures of every home idea I’ve liked down to pictures of socket covers. There’s no hard or fast rule to dreaming. It can be as big or as little as you want.

What are you working on now?

I’ve just started a MS in Mental Health Counseling. I’m probably writing at least 4 hours a week. I work as a paralegal too so briefs and affidavits make up part of my days. It’s not always fun writing, but it keeps me sharp. It’s good to be able to switch between styles.

What is your dream assignment?

I love to Travel and I’m a total foodie. I’d love anything that involved those two things. Combine them, and I’d be a hog in slop.

When I lived in Paris, I used to spend all of my petty cash on eating out at hidden little gems. I’d pretend I was a food critic. I found it actually helped my improve my palate. I certainly tried things I’d never dreamed of before. Pied de cochon s’il vous plait, anyone… anyone???
